Let’s get straight to the point, the 2014 Chrome Expression Sessions was the event of the year. I agree that there are still a few months to go till 2014 comes to an end but I can tell you why the Speedmagnet team rated this event so highly. Main reason? The people at the event, were the event.  You weren’t attending a show and seeing cars on display that had shiny engine bays, rad wheels and a pristine paint job. You weren’t at a race track watching drift cars slide past on limiter, or race cars whizzing along in front of you. At this event you had a chance to be part of all the action. You would find yourself next to the cars that you had seen at shows, and cars that you had seen at the racetrack. Hence, you were the event.

Take this for example, where else would you ever get to drive alongside a 6sec dedicated drag monster on the racetrack?

You got to hear the cars in all their glory, you got see the cars rolling next to you. It was cruising, then having a slight fang on the straights against several other cars.  And you got to share this experience with your mates as they were sitting in the car with you. This aspect of cruising with your mates in your pride and joy is how most of us initially got involved into the street scene.  That awesome feeling from back when you first cruised the streets, was somehow magically captured into a two day event. Brilliant!

It was a throwback to the years gone by. For those in Auckland, it would’ve brought back memories of the Quay street meets. The Wellingtonian’s would’ve felt they were rolling up and down Kent and Cambridge terrace. And those from Christchurch would’ve been reminiscing cruising the ‘Ave’s’. We can’t stress the next point enough, DO NOT miss this event when it is run again in 2015.

When the ‘Drive Your Mates’ session (DYM) was ending, and you got signaled to come off the track and back to the pits, everywhere you looked were stellar looking vehicles. The entire infield was packed over the weekend, with thousands of spectators through the gate. The weather helped with this, turning on two spectacular days in the middle of winter.

Some of the cars that had the masses at a standstill over the weekend…

Each day was split up into segments, the DYM sessions, drifting, drop flag drag racing, powerskids and a race car session. We are fully hoping in 2015 the race car session gets shortened (unless a massive field of race cars turn up, that would actually be rad), and the drop flag drags and DYM sessions get extended. Largely as there are plenty of dedicated days to take your race car for a fang, but the chance to rip around the track with passengers is scarce.

Now for some rolling shots..

There was also some powerskids going down. Powerskids – For people that just want to watch the world burn…

While all this action was taking place the skid pad was in use all day, with cars laying down rubber to the cheers of the crowd…

A massive mix of cars, a festival like atmosphere, a chance to hoon around with your mates without any worry of getting a ticket for speeding, excessive acceleration or even drag racing. This is the type of event the 4 and rotary community has been waiting for a long time. Now just to recap in case you missed it earlier, do not, by any means miss this event next year. You have been warned. If you miss it you will end up on your couch crying like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee925OTFBCA.
